THe process at Sedussa Studios

I have always loved high quality, uniquely crafted items, whether they be garments or vehicles or living spaces or…

Good craftsmanship is important to me, as is creativity, the love of color, and just having fun. But it wasn’t until I learned how to make corsets that I was able to combine all of these priorities into each individual item and share them with others…

My process involves picking the fabrics and deciding what looks different and striking together. Once I have cut the outer shell (the visible part of the corset), I then cut the middle layer (which gives the corset strength and the stability to hold the boning) and the lining. For my overbust corsets, every layer has 12 pieces, plus another piece if I add a modesty panel. Then I find the appropriate busk and the requisite 14 pieces of boning.

Assembling the busk is the trickiest part and takes the most skill. All three layers are involved, and the buttonholes have to be lined up precisely. Once that is accomplished, I add the waist ribbon and build the three layers individually. Joining them to each other and then binding them takes mostly patience and precision.

I work out of my home in Oakland, CA.
